A. Schulman Inc., Akron, Ohio, will expand and renovate a facility in Akron to produce additive masterbatches for film and packaging. That facility has been used for resin distribution. Production is to commence by year’s end with one or two new twin-screw extruders, each with capacity of 10 million to 15 million lb/yr. The building could ultimately house as many as four twinscrew lines.
Company president and CEO Joseph Gingo says the aim is to replicate in North America the success of Schulman’s concentrates businesses in Mexico and Europe. He also indicates the move toward packaging will allow the company to de-emphasize the automotive market, which had been 40% of its North American business. Potential targets for the new production include European customers with U.S. operations, some of whom have been served by Schulman’s Mexican site. Initial products will include antibacterial, antiblock, antifog, antioxidant, antislip, antistatic, barrier, cling, desiccant, foaming, and laser-marking masterbatches in PE, PP, PS, PET, and nylon. White concentrates will be added next.
