Glass-Like O2 Scavenger Debuts in Ketchup Bottle

A novel oxygen scavenger with glass-like clarity has won FDA food-contact approval and should be commercialized in a monolayer ketchup container within the next three months. That’s according to Constar International Inc., Philadelphia, a major molder of PET bottles and the developer of DiamondClear oxygen scavengers. DiamondClear 100 grade, targeted for ketchup bottles, is the fi rst in a new series of high-clarity barrier materials. Introduced in 2005, DiamondClear reportedly offers the same clarity as standard PET and has barrier performance similar to Monoxbar, Constar’s other monolayer barrier system. When blended with PET, DiamondClear has greater clarity than Monoxbar and other competing oxygen scavengers, according to Scott Pleune, vp. of marketing and business development. “We feel this will be the ultimate monolayer barrier solution for oxygen barrier in hot-fi ll food and juice containers,” he asserts. Other grades are in development for other food and beverage applications. Constar will use the technology in North America and may pursue licensing agreements outside the U.S. Tel: (215) 552-3700 • www.constar.net
