Nylon Baby Bottles Can Replace Polycarbonate—December 2001

EMS-Grivory in Germany and Sumter, S.C., is offering two nylons for making baby bottles, positioning them as bisphenol A-free replacements for polycarbonate. Bisphenol A, a chemical feedstock for PC, is under regulatory and consumer pressure due to allegations it poses potential health hazards as an endocrine mimic. Both nylons are aimed at premium markets, since their cost per pound is higher than PC. Both nylons are accepted by FDA for use in baby bottles.

Grilamid TR 90 is a clear copolyamide that has already been adopted by JEX Co. in Osaka, Japan, for 150- and 240-cc baby bottles. The resin has good toughness and resistance to hot-water sterilization and chemical cleaners. Its density is lower than PC's, permitting lightweighting by around 17%.

Grilamid TR55 is an amorphous nylon that provides higher stiffness and about 12% lightweighting potential compared with PC, while maintaining adequate impact strength.
