Induction Barrel Heating Saves Energy Big-Time—August 2007


A novel method of heating injection barrels by electromagnetic induction will be unveiled at the K 2007 show in Dusseldorf in October by Xaloy Inc., New Castle, Pa. Its new INDX non-contact heating system reportedly provides up to 70% energy savings, improves temperature control, and eliminates heater failures as compared with conventional heater bands. INDX uses a high-frequency power supply and helical induction coils to generate heat directly within the metal barrel wall. A thermal insulating layer between the coils and barrel cuts heat loss. The induction heating system is said to heat up at least twice as fast as conventional heater bands, deliver more heating capacity to the barrel, and achieve higher barrel temperatures for molding high-performance resins (or for metal injection molding).
