Keeping-Up with Extrusion

Dual-Motor Deckle for Extrusion Coating Is Automatic—August 2007

A spring-loaded external deckle for extrusion coating dies is the fi rst device to allow automatic, computer-controlled adjustment of coating widths, according to EDI Extrusion Dies Industries LLC, Chippewa Falls, Wis. Typically, the external, back-up deckle is adjusted manually with a sliding wedge mechanism. (The internal deckle is typically adjusted manually but can also be motorized.) EDI’s new automatic deckling system uses two AC motors. One makes the large width adjustment of both internal and external deckles in tandem; a second, smaller motor repositions the internal deckle blade to reduce edge bead. A new spring-loaded device applies pressure to seal the external deckle at the die lip and prevent leakage. Automatic adjustment is more consistent and safer for operators, since adjustments are made remotely, EDI says. The deckle will be shown at K 2007 in Dusseldorf in October.
