Frosted Look Is Molded in Thick-Wall PET Bottles—August 2007

Two new color masterbatches that give a frosted-glass look to PET bottles or thermoformed containers for cosmetics, alcoholic beverages, and other high-end consumer goods come from Ampacet Corp., Tarrytown, N.Y. Ampacet claims that molding in the frosted look costs at least 90% less than spraying on the frost effect after molding. One of the fi rst commercial applications for 603121-PT and 603122-PT masterbatches is heavy-walled PET bottles in 3.3 to 8 oz from Impressions Packaging of Peachtree City, Ga. Products' appearance can range from translucent to opaque. Intensity of the frosted effect depends on the letdown ratio, which is typically 1% to 5%. The masterbatches can be tinted to create effects like the soft blue and green tones of vintage glass. They also can contain pearlescent or other special-effect pigments.
