IR Camera Gauges Film Thickness on Temperature—September 2007

A new thickness gauge can calculate film thickness from surface temperature. IndiCam 100, developed by Betacontrol in Germany (U.S. offices in Towaco, N.J.), uses a fixed infrared camera to read surface temperature across the full width of the web simultaneously, whereas capacitance gauges can scan only a small area of film back and forth. The gauge can simultaneously measure the local temperature of the film at the die exit as a check on die temperature. The first prototype was built last year and is being tested on a 1-meter-wide line. Over 3 meters of film width can be covered by one camera. For higher resolution or very wide films, multiple cameras could be used. Betacontrol will introduce this system commercially at the K Show in Germany next month.
