Keeping-Up with Extrusion

Extruder with Planetary Section 'Dries' PET—September 2007

A single-screw extruder with a bulge in the middle for a multi-screw planetary section is said to degas undried PET fl ake and extrude it directly into strapping, film, or other products. Gneuss Kunststofftechnik GmbH in Germany (U.S. office in Matthews, N.C.) will show its novel extruder at K 2007 in Dusseldorf next month. The patented planetary section contains eight to 10 (depending on size) flighted spindles around a core that is part of the single screw. I.V. of the final product can be varied by adjusting the vacuum level in the planetary section, where a maximum 20 mbar of vacuum is needed to process undried PET. The first commercial model was built by Gneuss' manufacturing partner, Hans Weber Maschinenfabrik GmbH in Kronach, Germany, and shipped to Brasil earlier this year.
