Keeping-Up with Prototyping

Improved Resin and Software For Rapid Prototyping—September 2007

An new FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) rapid-prototyping and rapid-manufacturing system from Stratasys, Minneapolis, reportedly builds significantly better parts than previous entry-level FDM systems in terms of both strength and feature detail. FDM 200mc, which replaces the previous Prodigy Plus system, uses new Insight flow-control software and a new material, ABSplus, said to offer better fl ow and higher tensile, flexural, impact, and bond strengths than standard ABS. Stratasys says it makes parts up to 67% stronger. The 200mc has an 8 x 8 x 12 in. build envelope and can make parts with layers 0.007 or 0.010 in. thick. It offers a fully automatic mode and an advanced mode in which users can manipulate construction parameters to change mechanical properties of the part. It also allows users to pause the build in order to place inserts or change colors. Tel: (888) 4803548 . www.stratasys.com
