Keeping-Up with Extrusion

Gravimetric Control of Coex Layer Thickness—October 2007

K-Tron Process Group, Pitman, N.J., has developed its first gravimetric extrusion controls, designed for durable applications like multilayer films or sheet for automotive use or wire and cable coatings, where the thickness of critical functional layers may have to be guaranteed. K-Tron has had units running at beta sites in the U.S. and Europe for six months. The new system measures loss in weight for each of four ingredient hoppers and for the main feed hopper with individual load cells. This mass-flow information is used by new software in K-Tron’s Smart Commander controller to adjust extruder and haul-off speeds to control weight-per-length of each layer in multilayer cast film or thin sheet. The system is said to be accurate to ±0.25%. It will be shown for the first time at the K 2007 show this month in Dusseldorf. Tel: (856) 589-0500 • www.ktron.com
