Keeping-Up with Extrusion

Hyper Drive For Seven-Layer Film—October 2007

Esde Maschinentechnik GmbH in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany, will show the first high-speed, high-output extrusion system for seven-layer barrier film at the K 2007 show in Dusseldorf this month. High-speed extrusion uses small, direct-drive extruders at two to three times normal speed to produce the same output as extruders twice their size. Downstream cooling must be upgraded to handle the higher output. The line to be shown will have four 25-mm single-screw extruders that run at up to 1100 rpm, and one 50-mm unit that runs at a more modest 450 rpm. All have permanent-magnet, synchronous torque motors from Oswald Elektromotoren GmbH in Miltenberg, Germany. After the show, the line will go to a customer producing barrier meat wrap with a structure of colored PP/regrind/tie layer/EVOH/tie/regrind/colored PP.
