| A modified high-crystalline PP homopolymer for packaging boasts better stiffness, strength, and processability than conventional grades. Newly available from Sunoco Chemicals, Philadelphia, F020HC is a 2-MFI grade that has lower flow than the company’s other high-crystalline homopolymers (MFIs of 35, 60, and 100). The new grade is recommended for sheet extrusion and thermoforming; it potentially can be used in injection and blow molding. F020HC reportedly has 20% higher stiffness than typical homopolymers for packaging, allowing significant downgauging or lightweighting. It has a flexural modulus of approximately 300 kpsi as well as excellent clarity. For example, a 0.05-in.-thick injection molded cup has a haze of 20% to 22%. A 0.008-in.thick thermoformed cup has a haze of 4%. Moreover, the new resin offers a 5° to 10° F higher HDT, suggesting possible uses in hot-fill packaging and automotive under-hood parts.
