Novel polyol technology is designed to produce high-support and high-resilience (HS-HR) flexible PUR slabstock foam that offers excellent comfort and durability in premium furniture cushioning and mattresses. Ultracel U3000 from Bayer MaterialScience, Pittsburgh, is described as a stable 10% SAN solids dispersion in a high-molecular-weight polyether polyol. The new polyol is said to produce very stable yet shrink-resistant HS-HR foam that is easy to crush. It can be processed over a wide range of water levels and isocyanate indexes and with varying amounts of high-solids polymer polyols, such as Bayer’s Arcol HS-100 or Hyperlite E-850. Flexible PUR foam incorporating Ultracel U3000 reportedly can be manufactured cost-effectively to a wide range of firmness levels. Such foams are said to maintain firmness better than conventional PUR foams at equivalent densities and to rebound more quickly after short-term compression. Foams made with this polyol achieve a support factor of 2.5, said to be an appreciable improvement over the 2.0 factor for most better-quality conventional foams.
