The German parent of Ticona, Florence, Ky., has agreed to sell its Topas cyclo-olefin copolymer (COC) business to Daicel Chemical Industries Ltd. and Polyplastics Co., Ltd., both of Tokyo, Japan. Polyplastics is a joint venture of Daicel and Ticona. Daicel and Polyplastics plan to form a join venture in Germany to take over the current employees, manufacturing plant, and R&D facility. Topas COC is a clear, amorphous polymer with optical properties similar to PMMA, better heat resistance than polycarbonate, and better dimensional stability than either PMMA or PC. It can be used by itself or as a modifier of polyolefins to improve moisture barrier, stiffness, and heat resistance.
