What to See at NPE 2006: Polyurethanes and RIM
Despite the small number of polyurethane and RIM exhibitors, you will find some interesting new materials and equipment technology. One highlight will be a novel aliphatic PUR cast elastomer technology said to enable production of highly transparent parts with unique property profiles.

One highlight will be a novel aliphatic PUR cast elastomer technology said to enable production of highly transparent parts with unique property profiles. Developed by Bayer MaterialScience LLC to meet the increased global demand for high-quality ophthalmic products, the patented technology can make elastomers from extremely hard to very soft. They boast high impact, abrasion/scratch resistance, and light stability. They also have low viscosity at room temperature, 1.8:1 mix ratio, and fast demold.
High-pressure machines
New high-pressure RIM machines will be featured by Gusmer/Decker and Hi-Tech Engineering . Rimcell Lite high-pressure RIM machines from Gusmer/Decker sell for under $40,000. They feature PLC control, a self-cleaning GX15 mixhead (spray or pour versions), 10-gal day tanks, and a flow rate of 6 to 30 lb/min.
Hi-Tech’s EZRim high-pressure RIM machine is designed as a low-cost, simple alternative to low-pressure machines for production of gaskets or for lamination of sun visors, where PUR can replace epoxy. Operating with relay logic (no PLC), it sells for around $35,000, which is about 25% less than the company’s EcoRim unit and 30% to 45% less than others on the market.
