BMW’s Winning Designs

When you think of “BMW Group DesignworksUSA,” what comes to mind?

Yes, that’s right, the Premec Chalk Pen.

Or maybe the Varian EDGE radiosurgery suite.

Perhaps the AS Rock M8 mini gaming PC.

OK, you probably don’t think of any of those things, but it is worth noting that DesignworksUSA recently received eight GOOD DESIGN Awards for these products (and others) from The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.

Laurenz Schaffer, president of BMW Group DesignworksUSA, said of the organizations work, “We have the fortunate opportunity to take insights and learnings from a multitude of industries and markets to solve challenges with products and services spanning areas like medical and mobility, consumer goods and entertainment.”

And these learnings can be brought right back into the designs that the studio executes for the car side of the business. Arguably, this breadth of competence is highly beneficial to creating outstanding automotive designs, which the BMW team certainly has shown itself to be capable of, year in, year out.

By the way: One of the GOOD DESIGN Awards they garnered did have an automotive angle: It’s the BMW i Wallbox for residential charging of the company’s i vehicles:
