There’s the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 with 700 hp, but it would set the piggy bank back even farther.
So what’s a sports car performance enthusiast to do? Well, if 650 hp will do, then the 2015 Corvette Z06 will fit the bill, and the bill for the dealer will be but a fraction of what the other cars cost.
While the pricing for the 2015 model isn’t available, the starting MSRP for the previous, 2013 Corvette Z06 is $75,600, so even if GM doubled the price, it still wouldn’t come within sight of the aforementioned cars.
Steven Kiefer, vice president, GM Powertrain Engineering, says of the 6.2-liter V8 engine, “The LT4 Small block sets a new benchmark for power and torque and GM.”
So as regards the torque, its 650 lb-ft (@ 3,600 rpm) is 40% more than the previous-generation’s 7.0-liter LS7 engine.
And taking the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta as an example, GM points out that even though there is more horsepower from the Italian V12, the torque of the LT4 is greater. That’s 650 vs. 509.
The new LT4 features rotocast A356T6 aluminum cylinder heads; titanium intake valves; forged and machined power-metal steel connecting rods; forged aluminum pistons; and stainless steel exhaust manifolds.
The engine is mated to a seven-speed manual or a new paddle-shift eight-speed.
