Wire/Cable Business Index

Return to Extrusion Business Index

The Wire/Cable Business Index (1990=100) indicates market demand for wire and cable. This is a relatively small, mature market segment affected by trends in construction and manufacturing.

The Wire/Cable Business Index dropped 16% in the latest month when compared with a year ago. This followed an 11% dip during the previous month.

When compared with the previous year, this Index declined 9% during the third quarter of 2008. This followed a 12% drop in the second quarter. This Index will hit a cyclical bottom in the first quarter of 2009.

The U.S. economy will experience below-average growth during the next few months. This will curb demand for wire and cable products in the near-term. The U.S manufacturing sector will resume an uptrend in the second half of 2009. Demand from the residential construction sector will not improve until late-2009 of 2010.

After a drop of 12% in 2007, the output of wire and cable as indicated by our Wire/Cable Business Index is forecast to decline 8% in 2008 and 3% in 2009.
