Drying Basics

Dehumidifying drying is utilized to minimize or eliminate any problems that can be caused by too much or too little moisture in a plastic material during its processing. The extent to which moisture affects the quality of a molded part or extrusion has a lot to do with the specific plastic being used and with the intended purpose of the part. In any case, it is highly probable that improper or incomplete drying of the raw material will create problems, whether during processing or when the product is in use—or both.

The following topics form a guide to understanding the basics of dehumidifying plastic materials plus the esthetic and performance issues that are clear signs of improper drying.
