Thinking Seriously About Costs

Matt Naitove

No time like the present for some comprehensive cost control, right? Well, before you start racking your brain about what to do, you might want some thoughtful advice. One place to start is with a 188-page, easy-reading volume that’s jam-packed with expert insight and practical how-to tips, Cost Management in Plastics Processing by Dr. Robin Kent, who heads up Tangram Technology Ltd., a British plastics engineering consulting firm. His book ($140 plus shipping) was published last year by Plastics Information Direct in the U.K... Learn more

Purging Pointer of the Month...
Here's the next in a series of Purging Pointers offered exclusively to subscribers of this e-newsletter by Novachem, a leading manufacturer of purging compounds:

Flushing (that is, running an appropriate amount of clean, natural non-heat-sensitive resin through the system before introducing the purging compound) is an important step in the use of certain purging compounds. It’s especially important in difficult dark-to-light color changes because it gets the bulk of the color out at an early stage and increases the likelihood of a successful purge. Your flushing resin must be at least as stiff as the production resin you want it to displace. Clean un-dried regrind is fine. Usually two to four system volumes will suffice to flush with unless the changeover is particularly difficult (like removal of carbon black or a heavy loading of TiO2). In such cases, flush until the operator judges that most of the colorant has been removed... Learn more

Resin Buying Pointer of the Month…
Here's the next in a series of Resin Buying pointers offered exclusively to subscribers of this e-newsletter by the resin buying experts at RTi:

Have we reached the bottom with resin prices? There are many indicators that say we have.  Don’t look for prices to go up in January but the best deals need to be made in December. Negotiate, look for special offers and multiple car deals to surface in December and act now... Learn more

Mold Care Pointer of the Month…
Here's the next in a series of mold care pointers offered exclusively to subscribers of this e-newsletter by Slide Products, a leading manufacturer of mold care products and mold releases:

Don’t buy a mold release based on the number of ounces listed on the can. Depending on the formulation, often the ounces reflect the how much propellant is in the can, and not how many applications you can expect to get from each can. The products’ active ingredients and effectiveness on your particular application are better yard sticks for determining value... Learn more

Automotive Plastics: Adding More Value in Tough Times
The dramatic global downshifting in automotive manufacturing hasn’t put the brakes on plastics innovation, if recently announced developments are any indication. In fact, plastics’ value proposition has probably never stood out more clearly than in these difficult economic times. Struggling automakers have an even greater interest in exploring new materials and processes to deliver lower cost, lighter weight, and more easy recyclable parts and systems.
