Luigi Bandera Meccaniche S.p.A. of Milan, Italy, and Processing Technologies International (PTi) LLC, Aurora, Ill. have teamed up to furnish sheet extrusion systems for processing 100% reclaimed PET or PLA flake without need for drying and crystallizing. This process relies on Bandera’s patented High Vacuum Twin Screw Extruder (HVTSE), which devolatilizes and de-moisturizes the material as part of the extrusion process, reportedly saving more than 35% in energy use. Reclaim can be processed with a starting moisture content as high as 5000 ppm (0.5%), and minimal I.V. loss is said to result (typically 0.04 to 0.07 I.V. units).
The corotating twin-screw extruder—52:1 L/D with two high-vacuum venting zones in a 20D section—is integrated with downstream systems furnished by PTi as part of a turnkey package. PTi will also provide its Titan supervisory control system and UL-approved electrical components, and will service the lines. PTi also intends to install a production-scale demonstration line at its headquarters this year.
