A maker of laser and capacitive thickness gauges for film has developed an unusual system for high speed detection of a missing layer in 1-meter-wide, three-layer polyolefin film for lithium batteries. The Missing Ply Detector ensures the presence of a critical middle layer of PE only 6 microns thick. Oryx systems Inc. in Charlotte, N.C., measures transmission of light from 200 LEDs through the film to 200 very sensitive photo-detectors spaced 5 mm apart on the opposite side. Spectral analysis of the transmitted light indicates absorption of certain wavelengths where the critical layer is present.
