Accumulator Heads for Large, Lightweight Parts

A new line of accumulator heads is said to offer an economical solution for molding large furniture and storage-box panels that require large-diameter tooling but modest shot weight. Uniloy Milacron, Manchester, Mich., introduced low-profile FS heads with a compact, small-volume design that offers quick color changes and large-diameter tooling capability for about 20% of the cost of the larger-volume head that would otherwise be needed.

According to Uniloy, a molder needing 24-in.-diam. tooling to produce a large panel might normally buy a 200-lb head, but the new FS design allows use of only a 40-lb head. The fixed-spiral head with a plunger reportedly allows color changes within 20 shots instead of the typical all-day process with standard heads. A new cylinder arrangement increases push-out rates for shorter cycles, less parison hang time, and decreased parison stretch. Up to 300 points of parison profile control are standard.
