Recently registered with the U.S. EPA is Sanafor PO-5, a 5% zinc pyrithione antimicrobial masterbatch designed for easy incorporation in polyolefins during processing, without any adverse impact on mechanical properties.
Newly available from Janssen PMP, Titusville, N.J., the product is being positioned as a cost-effective alternative to silver-based additives, which only actively protect against bacterial and are costly. In contrast, Sanafor PO-5 has been shown to control the growth of microorganisms on plastic surfaces, providing long-term protection against bacteria, mold, mildew, and algae that can cause stains, odor and product degradation. This additive masterbatch also boasts good thermal stability and low-water solubility, which limits migration from the plastic.
