Ecocell GT from Polyfil Corp., Rockaway, N.J., is a new grade of the supplier’s Ecocell endothermic chemical foaming agent, in this case tailored for bioresin extrusion applications. This 50%-active pellet concentrate generates carbon dioxide gas and reportedly allows density reductions of up to 35%. The nanoparticle size of active ingredient and its unique, patent-pending chemistry are said to produce microcellular foam structures. In one instance, the microcellular structure imparted by Ecocell GT enabled a 20% weight reduction in polylactic acid (PLA) films as thin as 1 mil. Ecocell GT is FDA-approved and used at letdowns of 1% to 2%.
