A new line of single-component, waterborne, heat-activated adhesives is designed to bond untreated, unprimed polypropylene substrates to soft cover materials in vacuum-formed auto interior trim. Both spray-on Corabond LSE and roll-on Corabond RCA adhesives from PPG Industries Inc., Coatings & Resins Group, Pittsburgh, make it easier for manufacturers to switch from ABS or fiberboard to less expensive polymers such as PP. Many commonly used adhesives do not adhere to low-surface-energy polymers like PP without a primer or flame or corona pretreatment. PPG’s new adhesives are waterborne, single-component systems that are either sprayed directly on the PP substrate or applied by roller to polyolefin foam-backed vinyl.
