At the Milan Plast show in February, Macchi SpA of Italy ran a coex blown film line driven entirely by energy-efficient gearless motors-probably a world first. Gearless, synchronous, permanent-magnet torque motors drove three extruders, a horizontal oscillating hauloff, two nip rolls, and the winder (which used five of those motors all by itself). The motors were supplied by Siemens in Germany. The Torque 1FW3 motor on the 100-mm diam. main extruder had 16,000 Nm of torque; the motors on the 28-mm satellite extruders were rated at 7500 Nm apiece. At an open house during the show Macchi demonstrated two more three-layer blown film lines (for stretch hood film), also with gearless permanent-magnet motors. But these motors came from Baumuller of Germany (U.S. offices in Bloomfield, Conn.). Macchi says gearless motors generally save more than 10% on energy usage. Maintenance is also expected to be much lower with the elimination of gears. Macchi North America is in Guelph, Ont.
