WEB EXCLUSIVE: A new high-efficiency antioxidant masterbatch protects reprocessed or recycled polyolefins from degradation during processing, allowing film processors to use more recycle. The new product from Ampacet Corp., Mt. Vernon, N.Y., is recommended especially for clear packaging films, where more recycle is being used for cost savings or sustainability, but gels are unacceptable. The masterbatch also helps repelletized scrap or recycle perform more like virgin. In one clarity blown film application, 0.5% of the masterbatch reduced gels and allowed use of 10% edge trim and scrap with no loss of physical or optical properties, according to Ampacet. In another case, adding 1% masterbatch allowed a cast film processor to raise the level of to repelletized material from 5% to more than 15% in a critical application. The masterbatch is approved for food-contact uses.
