Enercon Industries Corp., Menomonee Falls, Wis., introduced the tangential plasma treater a year ago and has two dozen installed. It reportedly can treat even sheet thicker than 0.5 in. Previously, continuous atmospheric plasma was only used to treat thinner webs supported by a roll. Atmospheric plasma uses radio-frequency emissions to ionize a proprietary mixture of inert and reactive gases. Exposure to the energized gases improves surface adhesion for printing or lamination. Atmospheric plasma treating uses one-third the voltage of corona treaters and doesn't require ozone removal. The treatment (dyne level) is said to last more than six months vs. days or weeks for corona treatment. The Tangential Plasma3 can also treat 0.5-in.-diam. wire, cable, and tubing. Treatment widths greater than 2 meters are possible, and more treatment assemblies can be added for higher line speeds. Atmospheric plasma treats PET and PS easily, as well as harder to treat substrates like PP, PE, and PTFE. Tel: (262) 255-6070 . www.enerconindustries.com
