Maillefer SA of Switzerland (U.S. office in Kingsport, Tenn.) has designed an elaborate system for in-line production of foam-insulated PEX/aluminum/PEX composite pipe for a European producer. It saves hand-wrapping pipe with foam insulation for hotwater use inside hollow walls. The line will use PEX composite pipe produced off-line, then unwind PE foam tube from coils, slit the foam, insert the PEX pipe into it, reheat the edges, compress and weld the seams together again, and extrude a jacket of HDPE over the foam to form a protective sheath. The foam tube is extruded off-line and wound into 700- to 1200-meter-long coils. The line will insulate PEX composite pipe from 16 to 26 mm diam. with foam tubing of 28 to 46 mm OD.
