A venting system that improves part surface quality by removing gas in the melt before it is injected is a new option from JSW Plastics Machinery Inc., Corona, Calif. At present it is available for the smallest (33-ton) models in JSW's J-AD line of all-electric machines. Unveiled at last month's Platex show in Osaka, Japan, the venting system consists of a special two-stage screw that is typically 40% to 50% longer than a standard screw, as well as a vent port in the barrel and a vacuum pump with fi lter. The system reportedly removes 50% to 60% of the gas in the polymer (the remainder escapes in the mold). It removes enough gas to eliminate silver streaks, improve transparency, and reduce paint faults with engineering or glass-fi lled materials. It also reduces mold maintenance. JSW also showed a new hybrid-electric model designed for ultra-fast injection. Its 121-ton model J110AD-UPS-50H has an electric servo-driven hydraulic pump system for injection that delivers up to 1500 mm/sec injection speed. Response times are 2.3 millisec for injection speeds from 0 to 500 mm/sec and 7 millisec for injection speeds from 0 to 1500 mm/sec. JSW also offers a 500-ton model. At the show, the121-tonner molded polycarbonate cell-phone light-guide panels just 0.285 mm thick (vs. the usual 0.4 to 0.5 mm) with a 2.2 g shot and injection speed of 800 to 900 mm/sec.
