Ball Corp. in Broomfield, Colo., is the first U.S. bottle blower to run a Plasmax 12D barrier coating system from SIG Plasmax GmbH in Germany, parent of SIG Beverages USA, Hillsborough, N.J. The coating system provides barrier protection for wine and flavored alcoholic beverages (FAB) in single-serve PET bottles smaller than 12 oz. SIG's Plasma Impulse Coating Vapor Deposition (PICVD) system applies a silicon oxide coating less than 0.1 microns thick inside PET bottles. The coating reportedly raises the shelf life of wine, FAB, juice, carbonated soft drinks, and beer. It has 12 dualbottle coating stations. Ball reports total output up to 60 million bottles/ yr. The Plasmax system was developed by SIG and Schott HiCotec, a coating specialist in Mainz, Germany. SIG: (908) 253-9600 . www.sigcorpoplastusa.com
