A seven-layer coex sheet line with six extruders, being built for Winpak Portion Packaging in South Chicago Heights, Ill., may be the most complex barrier sheet line ever designed. It will be able to laminate in line with coextrusion and also chemically foam the layer from the main 6-in. extruder. It will make barrier sheet with EVOH plus PS, PP, or PET cores. Winpak hopes to be able to coextrude PP or PET foam with EVOH, but it may have to use lamination. The line is being built by Processing Technologies inc., Aurora, Ill. PTi says it’s one of the world’s largest barrier sheet lines—making 66-in.-wide sheet starting at 10 mils thick. Until now, Winpak’s widest sheet was 40 in.
