Macro Engineering & Technology Inc., which has stacked dual-lip air rings on top of each other since the early 1980s, recently developed a new version for improved output and film gauge with low-melt-strength materials like LLDPE and metallocene PE. Macro’s D10-B binary air-ring system has redesigned nozzles in the second ring that remove hot air from the bubble between air rings and replace it with cold air. The D10-B system creates a bulge between the air rings that precools and stabilizes the film before it’s blown to its full diameter above the second air ring. This improves gauge, output and clarity, Macro says. Originally Macro and other makers of dual air rings kept a straight stalk between air rings, expanding the bubble only above the second air ring.
