At the recent Drinktec exhibition in Munich, Germany, Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd., Bolton, Ont., demonstrated new approaches to faster molding and lightweighting of PET beverage preforms and HDPE one-piece closures. At the show, Husky demonstrated what it said was “the world’s first system specifically optimized for manufacturing preforms with high percentages of food-grade recycled PET flake.” A 72-cavity HyPET Recycled Flake (RF) 300 system with High Performance Package (HPP) ran a blend of 50% virgin and 50% post-consumer PET flake. It produced 34.7-g EcoBase preforms for 1.5L bottles on the same 10.5-sec cycle that would be expected running 100% virgin.
The 2.5% lightweighted EcoBase preform design was introduced by Husky at NPE 2009 in Chicago last June. Some of the modifications in this system include in-line melt filtration to eliminate black specks and other contaminants, as well as a new plasticating design for improved processing of pellet/flake blends. Husky says processors already using recycled flake should see reduced processing and quality problems with this system and be able to use higher flake content.
Husky also demonstrated its new HyCAP 300 high-output molding system optimized for beverage closures, which was also unveiled at NPE. The 72-cavity system ran new lightweight closures using the PCO 1881 “short-neck” design, weighing only 2.3 g, at less than 3.9-sec cycles. HyCAP is based on Husky’s Hylectric hybrid press design.
