WEB EXCLUSIVE: BASF Corp., Florham Park, N.J., has introduced a new member of the Ecovio line of fully biodegradable blends of PLA biopolymer and Ecoflex petro-based, biodegradable polyester. Ecovio FS comes in two grades optimized for paper coating or shrink films, respectively. They blends of PLA and the new Ecoflex FS resin which is partly bio-based, unlike previous Ecoflex grades. (Ecoflex FS is not sold separately.) This raises the bio-based content of Ecovio FS Paper to 75% and of Ecovio FS Shrink Film to 66%. These grades are said to biodegrade even more rapidly than previous Ecovio materials. Ecovio FS Paper for coating cups or cardboard boxes reportedly shows good adhesion. Ecovio FS Shrink Film is said to have greater load capacity at 25 micron thickness than polyethylene film twice as thick.
