Two new nylon 6 resins are in the final stages of commercialization for molding fuel containers (jerry cans) and small fuel tanks for motorcycles, snowmobiles, off-road vehicles, personal watercraft, boats, chain saws, and lawn/garden equipment. Such tanks and containers have been subjected to tighter fuel-emissions regulations both here and abroad. To meet these new standards, Rhodia Engineering Plastics, Cranbury, N.J., has been pursuing monolayer barrier containers of nylon 6 as a more durable and economical solution than multilayer coextrusion blow molding or
fluorination of monolayer HDPE. Rhodia already has two blow molding grades of nylon 6 (Technyl C536 XT and C548 B) that have been used in such applications for two years.
The two new Technyl grades, as yet undesignated, can run in standard extrusion blow molding machines with little or no changes in tooling designed for HDPE. These grades may also be injection molded and hot-plate welded. They were developed to address industry demand for greater impact resistance at low
temperatures. The new grades are said to meet industry standards for -20 C impact strength, though Rhodia sources believe the materials provide ample toughness at even lower temperatures.
Rhodia claims that monolayer nylon 6 can meet U.S. EPA and California CARB emissions standards without the extra expense of coextrusion machinery or post-mold fluorination processes (usually performed off-site). Rhodia sources also note that new European standards for end-of-life vehicle testing weigh against fluorination because the treatment can be eroded by continual sloshing of fuel in the tank, leading to gradual loss of barrier.
