Taking a concept from hydraulic toggle closing for massive dies used in rubber extrusion, Extrusion Dies Industries (EDI) LLC, Chippewa Falls, Wis., designed and built a new concept for rapidly releasing the clamp force on a flat die without bolts. It takes about a minute. The coathanger die uses hydraulics to work a toggle that turns a clamping rod with male splines. Those splines contact lugs in the die body to lock the die down. Four toggles are driven by one hydraulic cylinder. Each toggle moves two clamping rods, corresponding to two bolts spaced 3 in. apart. The device is for dies that must be cleaned often, such as those for PVC and other degradable materials. EDI has delivered several boltless dies that are in commercial production.
