A new dynamic buffering system for PET bottle conveyors operates as a bypass when production is running smoothly or as a buffer system in cases of downstream stoppages. For example, if the labeler malfunctions, the buffer system stores the bottles, enabling the blow molding machine to continue operating. The Acculink system from Krones, Inc., Franklin, Wis., consists of a continuous chain that winds in a spiral around a horizontal or vertical axis. A slide system turns the end of the chain to define the length of the storage section. Up to 2200 bottles can be stored in 20 m2. There is no contact between bottles because a gripper attached to the chain holds the bottle neck throughout the system. Five meters high and 4 to 5 meters wide, Acculink is modular and operates on a “first-in/first-out” principle.
