An antimicrobial additive made exclusively for medical technology designer Etcetera LLC in Northampton, Mass., is being developed for antimicrobial plastic films. Etcetera is partnering with Omniflex LLC, Greenfield, Mass., a maker of super-thin blown and cast TPU films, to develop medical films for wound dressings and breathable films to be applied to fabric to prevent perspiration odor. The proprietary additive is used at 0.5% to 2% in TPU. A common antimicrobial additive in plastics is silver, which kills bacteria, but not very fast. Etcetera’s new additive, also under evaluation in nonwovens for medical face masks and protective apparel for clean rooms, kills bacteria in 30 min.
