New carbon nanotube compounds from RTP Co., Winona, Minn., are said to offer substantial performance and cost improvements over previous grades. They are available in such resins as PC, PBT, PETG, PPS, PEI, and PEEK. The emergence of new carbon nanotube suppliers has reduced the cost of these novel additives and opened up new commercial opportunities, says Ned Bryant, sr. product development engineer. New formulations also use lower loadings-under 5%. The second-generation nanotube compounds are claimed to have greater toughness, ductility, and elongation. They deliver superior electrical conductivity, eliminate residual voltage ("hot spots"), and meet strict liquid particle count standards for cleanliness. Key applications include electrical data storage and automotive fuel lines and quick connects. Tel: (507) 454-6900. www.rtpcompany.com

In failure analysis, there is a tendency to gravitate to a few common test protocols. But this approach can result in a mismatch of techniques to the problem.
