A new line of transparent nylons targets applications where polymers such as polycarbonate and polystyrene are not suitable, particularly those involving harsh solvents. Nycotrans resins from Nylon Corp. of America Inc. (Nycoa), Manchester, N.H., reportedly retain their properties after exposure to organic solvents such as gasoline, oil, and diesel fuel. These nylon 6 "multipolymers" incorporate three or more monomers. Available in injection and extrusion grades, they are said to exhibit high impact and strong weldability to nylon 6 and 66. They also boast good barrier properties, chemical resistance, and uv stability. Commercial applications include food-packaging film, injection molded sight glasses, filter housings, sun and safety glasses, and medical components.
