A new high-clarity grade of cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) has enabled the Cryovac unit of Sealed Air Corp., Duncan, S.C., to cut in half the haze of its Xenith3 soft-shrink packaging film.

A new high-clarity grade of cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) has enabled the Cryovac unit of Sealed Air Corp., Duncan, S.C., to cut in half the haze of its Xenith3 soft-shrink packaging film. This third-generation Xenith3 film has only 3% haze. It uses Topas COC resin from Topas Advanced Polymers Inc., Florence, Ky., to achieve a unique combination of low shrink force and high strength. The five-layer films (PE-tie-COC-tie-PE) also shrink easily and have high free shrink over a wide processing window, also attributed to the presence of COC. Tear strengths range from 30 to 90 g/mil, vs. 2 to 20 g/mil for typical soft-shrink film. One grade has impact strength of 14.2 lb (by ASTM D3763) vs. 9.7 lb for typical soft-shrink film. Sealing temperatures typically start at 150 F, or at least 50° to 75° F lower than competing films.
