New technology for multi-layer bottles coextrudes a thin skin of soft-touch TPE onto HDPE. The ability to apply an ultra-thin TPE outer layer keeps costs down while
allowing application of non-slip gripping surfaces or an aesthetic effect. The technique was co-developed by Kautex Machines, Inc., North Branch, N.J., and PolyOne’s GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers business in McHenry, Ill. “HDPE is the preferred material for many packaging applications, but until now, adding tactile
effects required a separate coating process,” said Rick Noller, GLS global marketing director. The new technology uses translucent Dynalloy TPE from GLS. It can be colored and customized for tactile properties. Kautex technology can make a TPE layer of only a few mils, or 2-3% of bottle thickness.

In failure analysis, there is a tendency to gravitate to a few common test protocols. But this approach can result in a mismatch of techniques to the problem.
