WEB EXCLUSIVE A five-layer cast and blown film line for lab or small-scale production was recently built by Macro Engineering & Technology Inc., Mississauga, Ont. It can be converted from blown to cast film in less than 2 hr. Switching involves removing the 4-in.-diam. blown film die and attaching the 22-in.-wide cast film die. With the latter in place, the extruder platform is raised and a pre-aligned casting unit is moved along tracks into active position. The line is equipped with all the features of a full-scale blown and cast film line, including a D10 dual-lip air ring, IBC, die-based automatic gauge control, and a dual-sided corona treater. The auto-gauge-control system uses the same Thermo Fischer thickness gauge (with special software) to control blown and cast film. The same extruder and winder are used in both modes. Meanwhile, Rajoo Engineers Ltd. in Rajkot, India, recently supplied its first convertible 5-layer coex line for the application center of Indian resin producer, Reliance Industries Ltd. The line converts from barrier sheet to blown film. It has four extruders, screen changers, melt pumps, and a flat die for sheet up to 650 mm wide and 0.2 to 0.8 mm thick; as well as a 5-layer coex die for blown film from 25 to 100 microns. Output is up to 165 lb/hr. Sheet and film dies shuttle back and forth on rails into position between the extruders and winder, which are used in both modes.
