KraussMaffei Berstorff, Florence, Ky., has optimized its ZEUT-R twin-screw extruder series by adding features to allow processing of compounds with up to 80% filler. Such compounds are typically used in blown film for bags, sacks, or construction film. The machine features deep flights and a correspondingly large free volume, necessary for mixing high filler quantities or fillers of low bulk density. Processing lengths range between 50:1 and 56:1 L/D. Filler is partly introduced in the feed zone; residual filler amounts are subsequently added in different portions via two side feeders. Three atmospheric degassing systems and one vacuum degassing unit eliminate any air that may be introduced into the system.
