A new line of conductive thermoplastic compounds from RTP Co., Winona, Minn., meets the strict demands of Europe's ATEX Directive (94/9/EC) and EN 50014 standard. The regulations, which took effect in 2003, dictate that all new equipment and protective systems used in explosive or hazardous environments must meet certain requirements for electrical isolation, uv stability, and resistance to heat, flame, impact, and chemicals. The new PermaStat compounds provide permanent static-dissipative behavior. One example, RTP 2500 PC/ABS, was developed for an ATEX-compliant personal dust monitor used in coal mines. Another grade, RTP 100 Series PP, is used to mold a flashlight which is used at hazardous sites. The latter compound had to be conductive enough to meet ATEX requirements but not so conductive as to drain the battery.
