The first inexpensive device to test the efficiency of different uv wavelengths for curing inks and adhesives is newly available from UV Process Supply Inc., Chicago. Built initially for the company's own use, the TFC-9000 thin-film calorimeter measures heat generated by the curing reaction. By comparing results from multiple samples, a processor can easily determine which uv wavelength or type of curing lamp will maximize productivity. The device can also test the shelf life of stored inks and adhesives. The company says the only similar test device on the market costs over $70,000 and takes about 1 hr per sample, while the TFC-9000 costs $4800 and tests film samples in under 2 min.
