A new deformable die-ring system for controlling material distribution in large parts offers several features said to reduce cost and improve reliability and user-friendliness. Unlike competitive systems, the 3DX system from BMC Controls Ltd., Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, U.K., is designed so users can service the system themselves. The heart of the system is a die ring that is flexed into an oval position by hydraulic servo-cylinders controlled by a programmable profile similar to a parison programmer. BMC’s innovative mounting method reportedly protects the cylinder seals from heat from the head. Also, a unique limit stop system enables users to strip and reassemble the system themselves. New hydraulic safeties prevent die damage from accidental cold starts. And a proportional push-out system improves effectiveness on accumulator-head machines.

BMC offers a complete retrofit system to upgrade machine hydraulics and electronic controls to accept the 3DX system.
