A new alternative to chemical water treatment to prevent formation of lime scale deposits in cooling-water lines is available from Clearwater Enviro Technologies, Inc., Clearwater, Fla. Seven new industrial models have been added to its UL-listed ScaleBlaster line of electronic descalers. They handle steel pipe from 4 to 26 in. diam. and other pipe from 12 to 40 in. diam. Smaller models are offered for commercial or residential size pipes.
The ScaleBlaster controller sends out a square-wave current that rapidly sweeps a range of selected frequencies. Carried by electrical coils wrapped around the pipe, the current induces a magnetic field that causes calcium carbonates to lose their adhesive scale-forming properties, the company explains. As a result, new scale reportedly does not form and existing scale wears away.
